The video, “How to Argue With Idiots” caught my attention when it was featured on the youtube home page.
It came at just the right time for me as I’ve started to receive comments to my blog posts that are dismissive and oppositional. Some people speak to me as if I have no right to an opinion that differs from theirs. I’m amused by people who act as if theirs is the deciding opinion. “What I say goes!” Very parental.
It’s so easy to send a nasty message when safely seated at a computer commenting, tweeting and face-booking with wild abandon. For them, it must be fun. For the person on the receiving end, not so much.
Reminds me of the the Queen of Hearts waving her hand and saying to Alice in Wonderland, “Off with her head!”
Come to think of it, I feel like saying the same thing to certain people. But, perhaps applying the death sentence to minor verbal infractions is getting a bit carried away.
To help open my mind and to find some new tactics for dealing with snarky comments online, I watched the video.
In the end, the best advice remains – as mentioned in the video – just ignore idiots. “Do not gratify their need for attention.”
DramaGuru Game Plan
If knowing how to handle other people when they’re getting verbally rough with you is a habit you’d like to develop, check out the game I created called “DramaGuru Revelation”
The game is designed to assist you in unraveling knots in communication. When a situation happens, both sides claim to be right. Whether that’s an argument at home or in the workplace, I suggest that you step into the role of “DramaGuru Player” and look for ways to “interrupt the pattern, change the game”.
Playing the game helps players figure out tactical moves to make. The game is designed for people who have no idea what to do when the bully is winning.
