What are your favorite choices for anti-aging food and drink? Guest blogger Samantha Gray shares her “how to stay young from the inside out” list below.
Stores that push new age products and health-centric fare tend to carry items touted as having anti-aging qualities. The problem is that a great deal of things could fall under the umbrella of an “anti-aging” product because not everyone agrees on what the term means. Some products claim to slow aging, others promise to reverse it altogether, while others state that they help people merely age gracefully.
I’d like to talk about some food and drinks that definitely do have anti-aging properties, and by that I mean that they’re healthy enough to help you live a longer and happier life. What else could you reasonably ask for in a product?
A recent study reaffirmed what some scientists and drinkers have believed all along: red wine has considerable anti-aging properties. Specifically, red wine has a chemical known as resveratrol that is believed to aid in the anti-aging process. Scientists found that mice could benefit from ample doses of resveratrol in conjunction with a certain gene involved in cell function and lifespan. So enjoy a glass for your health and long life!
Soybean and soy based products are also thought to possess great anti-aging qualities. Products like soy milk, tofu, and soy-based substitute dairy products are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a nutrient that offers a wide array of health benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids are great for maintaining proper cell growth and function, aiding in brain and heart health. soy has other benefits to health, including isoflavones and phytic acids, both of which are thought to reduce certain types of cancers. Soy products are becoming more and more prevalent in grocery stores, so don’t hesitate to try some out on your next trip!
Another great (and natural) anti-aging food is the berry. They’re rich in antioxidants that help fight cancer and other disorders, filled with vitamins and minerals necessary to nutrition, and have few calories to worry about. Some berries (like blueberries) have the same anti-aging agent resveratrol as does most red wines. They’re also a great source of fiber. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are just some of the berries that offer these substantial health benefits. And what’s more, they taste great.
The last item on our list is perhaps one of the best drinks for anti-aging properties. Green tea was originally cultivated and consumed in China, but has since taken popularity worldwide because of its great taste and clear health benefits. Green tea is rich in anti-oxidants, particularly flavonoids, which are great nutrients for fighting potential cancer causing agents, as well as other anti-oxidants which perform similar functions. Green tea also has essential vitamins and minerals (who knew?) and is believed to increase heart health.
