Because Miesha Tate defeated Jessica Eye, plans are in the works for a trilogy fight with current UFC bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. But, first, Ronda has to face — and defeat — a very determined Bethe Correia, in Brazil at UFC 190.
Ronda Rousey loves to fight angry
This time the Rousey family honor is on the line. Bethe made a comment like “I hope you don’t kill yourself after the fight”.
Because Ronda’s dad committed suicide, Ronda was deeply offended.
In the UFC 190 Countdown video, Bethe said she wasn’t referring to Ronda’s dad.
I believe that could be true. Bethe explained that Brazilian people use that “don’t kill yourself” phrase all the time.
Come to Jesus meeting
At the press conference, Ronda said she would “discipline” Bethe and have a “come to Jesus” meeting with her. In English that means, “We need to have a serious chat about your attitude. You’re out of order and I’m not happy right now”.
In Ronda’s words, people get invited to a come-to-Jesus meeting when, “You need to be shown what’s up.”
In the video, Bethe was offended by Ronda’s reference to a “come to Jesus” meeting. The way Bethe translated, it sounds like Ronda’s going to kill her and send her to meet Jesus in the after-life.
Well, words were exchanged. Things get lost in translation. There’s heat on both sides. Ronda wants the fight to be long and punishing. Bethe wants to KO Ronda in the first round.
Bethe touched a nerve
Emotional fighters make mistakes. Coming out too hot and too angry causes some fighters to charge towards their opponents at the opening bell. That sometimes works. And sometimes doesn’t.
I hope Ronda can keep her emotions in check and just leave all the upset about her dad in the locker room.
Bethe is heavy-handed. And she likes to kick. She has a much stronger personality than anyone Ronda has faced so far. No other woman has had an entire country on her side, wishing, hoping and praying for a new Brazilian champion.
Best to keep private life, private — and outside of the octagon.
In the video, Ronda comments on the steady calmness of her boxing sparring partner. “Calm fighters can take a shot.”
If Ronda can maintain that perfect balance of violent and skillful yet calm, she’ll probably do what she always does — win the fight and maintain that perfect record.
But if Ronda gets too emotionally worked up, she might make a mistake. And fiercely competitive Bethe will be watching and waiting to take advantage of any opening the champion gives her.
Iron Mike Tyson Loves How Ronda Fights
Ronda’s striking looks very impressive. Her challengers haven’t tested Ronda’s striking yet. In the UFC 190 Countdown video, it’s obvious that former boxing champion, Iron Mike Tyson adores Ronda Rousey.
Will Bethe be the one to provide the opportunity for Ronda to showcase her footwork and striking power? I hope so and I also hope to see more than one round of a very exciting fight.
If Jesus Were Here
If Jesus were here, (sitting in the front row next to UFC president Dana White) I think He’d be delighted to see a couple of rounds before one of these fighters gets knocked out or choked out. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Him in several photos celebrating with the one who emerged victorious.
Jesus got game and He loves everybody.
