Envy, Striving and Keeping Up Appearances
I’ve lived long enough to realize that envy generally backfires. When I desire, covet and dream about something that looks good, I either suffer because I don’t have one (and everyone else does) or I move mountains to make sure I GET IT!
I spend countless hours planning and scheming about how to get it and what it’s going to be like when I’ve got it. I rarely spend time thinking about what it would be like NOT to have it.
If only I had the discipline to substitute something cheaper or different. Or to stand independently and watch other people go through the cycle of “getting it — and then wanting to get rid of it.”
Sometimes, after I get, “that thing”, I’m still NOT HAPPY because I’m worrying that I will lose it, spoil it, or someone will take it away from me.
My heart loves “The Show”
People say, “The heart wants what the heart wants.”
But my heart is not my brain.
“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Proverbs 14:30 NIV
Discipline. Something to work on. Not fun. Not exciting.
But, if everyone else were being disciplined, then maybe I would be too.
