Tonya Evinger is the only 135er crazy enough to take a fight with Cyborg on short notice
11:15 pm, 27 June 2017: I’ve been reposting fanposts that I originally posted on bloodyelbow. This one is old news now, because Megan Anderson has changed her mind about fighting Cris Cyborg. She hopes to face Cris at some other time to challenge her for the belt. Cyborg will now face Tonya Evinger, another now-former Invicta Fighting Championship fighter.
According to Sherdog, Evinger’s record stands at 19 wins, 5 losses and 1 no-contest. Compared with Megan Anderson, Tonya has much deeper fight experience. Her first bout was in 2006.
Mean vs Green: Cris Cyborg against Megan Anderson
Originally posted on bloodyelbow as a fanpost.
On an MMAFighting video from March 2017, Ariel Helwani asked Megan Anderson (landing the straight right punch) about upcoming opponents and who she might like to fight.
What Megan Anderson Thought In March 2017
Megan said, “I would love to step up in competition and fight Holly (Holm). She’s a world-class boxer and she’s been fighting for a very long time. I’d love to give all the fans who think I’m not at that level yet…I’d like to show them what I’ve got…I’m world-class with my striking, my wrestling and my ground game. I’m getting better everyday, every week that I’m training and I’m getting better every fight.”
Cris Cyborg vs Megan Anderson
Well, the match-makers saw fit to go above and beyond Megan’s wish to fight former UFC champion Holly Holm. Now, Megan will face Cris Cyborg at UFC 214.
In the video, Megan referenced her upcoming opponent, Cris Cyborg, by saying that Cris was fighting Marloes Coenen when she was still in high school. She emphasized that she’s only been doing this sport for four years. Megan has a lot of respect for Cyborg, who is known as “the baddest woman on the planet”.
Cyborg is 31 years of age and her first MMA bout was in 2005. Megan is 27.
Why bring up Marloes Coenen?
Marloes Coenen lasted four rounds with Cyborg back in 2013. Since then, no one else has.
With the exception of Gina Carano and Leslie Smith, Marloes’ opponents have more recognizable names than Cyborg’s list of wins.
I’m looking forward to seeing Megan’s debut, but I think she is amazingly brave to face Cris Cyborg with only four years experience in the fight game.
Miracles happen. Remember GSP vs Serra?
But miracles happen. Just ask Matt Serra. He defeated GSP, much to everyone’s surprise and walked away with a welterweight championship belt back at UFC 69.
Megan would like to fight top-ranked Julia Budd (Bellator) and former Featherweight champion, Germaine de Randamie.
Megan said she’s not a fan of big crowds. Dang. It’s gonna get awful noisy in that arena come fight night. But the crowds will be the least of her worries. Because as previously mentioned in a different post, Cyborg is terrifying.
