Listening to Conor speak, helped me to parse out a reason for why I love MMA. This sport, a mixture of different martial arts styles, constantly offers the opportunity to fight in places where you don’t feel strong.
Different Strokes for Different Folks
Everyone prefers to play to their strengths. But, if your opponent is wily and dastardly, he will take you out of your depth — to the very place, you don’t want to go.
If boxing is your strength, your opponent will eat punches, if necessary, to tackle you to the ground.
If you are taller, your opponent will chop at your legs with kicks designed to weaken your base. Once your front leg is battered, your ability to put your weight on it — to land a good punch — is removed. Now, what will you do? Dig deep, locate your next strength and keep on fighting.
Wrestlers, fight low. To take you down to the ground, they aim for your hips. They want to fight you in their favorite territory. Be ready to dodge with lateral moves, when they shoot in to put you on your back.
A Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) fighter respects your punches, but will grab a kick — if you throw it, all lazy and lackadaisical. They will catch your leg and use it to throw you off-balance. Then, they take you to the ground, smother you for a minute to make you uncomfortable. And then choke you out or bend your arm in an awkward way.
Just like the line in that famous song by Sly and the Family Stone, “Different strokes, for different folks and so on and so on and scooby dooby doo by”.
Just do you. You be you. Work with what you’ve got.
Humble in victory or defeat
“Cocky in prediction, confident in preparation, but always humble in victory or defeat,”
Your opponent takes you where your strength is weakest.
Only your opponent uses the word, “weak”.
Saying, “less strong” means still ready to keep on fighting. Weak implies that you have no answer, no response.
Don’t be the guy without an answer.
Knowing that, what can you do to get ready?
Like Conor, be confident in your preparation.
